InetUK Statistics
InetUK: Market SizeThe following graph shows the growth of Internet services in the UK and Ireland between 1990 and 1999. It is based on information provided by the companies themselves and shows the number of active Internt companies by taking account the number of companies which stopped providing services.
InetUK: List GrowthSince not all companies have provided the date that they started providing Internet services, another - very loose - indicator of the growth of Internet access and service provision is the number of entries on the lists during the years. Companies appear on InetUK either because they send me an entry or because I have read about them in a magazine and added their contact details to the InetUK database. The big increase in August 1996 is due to my actively looking for companies on the web, using Yahoo. Note that a company could have been providing services some time before they are included in this list. |

1998 Central European ISP SurveyEarly in 1998, we were approached by an international telecommunications company to report on the Internet access market in Central Europe. As they were considering acquiring an Internet access provider, the company was interested in companies which matched a certain profile. The project was run by Paola Kathuria & Frank Wales through our associated company, Limitless, who designed and ran an online survey which was completed by invited companies in Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland. Over half the companies invited completed the survey and the respondents were mainly the company owners, directors or senior managers. As an incentive to provide information, the client agreed that a summary report could be made available not less than six months after the survey. The resulting survey summary contains graphs and tables that compare the results from the three countries, without identifying any individual company. |
Networld + Interop 1996We were invited to give a talk at October's Networld+Interop 1996 in London. The title was Internet Services Providers: Who are they and what are their business strategies? Frank Wales gave the presentation for ArcGlade, using information from InetUK and a survey we conducted during September and October 1996. The survey asked about companies' backgrounds, their aims when they started and their aims now, what they saw as threats and opportunities and how they saw the Internet developing in the next few years. 100 companies responded to the survey.
